Our Recommendation
8.8

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a spectacular aerial tour of the southern African coastline, featuring UNESCO World Heritage wetlands, massive freshwater lakes, and diverse wildlife reserves.

Right Side Highlights
8.8
🌉

Maputo-Katembe Bridge

Africa's longest suspension bridge visible immediately after takeoff from MPM.

🐘

Maputo Special Reserve

A vast conservation area where you might spot lakes and herds of elephants from high above.

💧

Lake Sibaya

South Africa's largest natural freshwater lake, separated from the sea by massive forested dunes.

🐊

iSimangaliso Wetland Park

A UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the expansive Lake St. Lucia estuary system.

🏭

Richards Bay Port

The industrial scale of one of South Africa's largest coal export terminals and deep-water ports.

🐍

Tugela River Mouth

The dramatic point where the largest river in KwaZulu-Natal empties into the Indian Ocean.

Sit on the right for the best land views. Morning flights are ideal as the sun will be behind you, illuminating the wetlands and lakes of the iSimangaliso system perfectly. Look for the contrast between the turquoise ocean and the deep green coastal forests. During the descent into DUR, the right side often provides a great view of the rolling green hills of the Zulu Kingdom.

Left Side Highlights
4.2
🌊

Indian Ocean Horizon

Uninterrupted views of the deep blue Indian Ocean stretching towards Madagascar.

🏖️

Machangulo Peninsula

The narrow strip of land separating the Maputo Bay from the open ocean.

🐋

Marine Life Spotting

During winter months, keep an eye out for Humpback whale breaches near the surface.

🛥️

Deep Sea Vessels

Large cargo ships and tankers waiting to enter the Maputo or Richards Bay ports.

The left side is best for morning flights if you want to see the sunrise over the water, though glare can be intense. It is generally less scenic unless you enjoy the meditative view of open water and distant horizons.
