MRVLED

Our Recommendation
8.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a superior view of the Greater Caucasus Range and Mount Elbrus upon departure, along with a high probability of seeing the St. Petersburg city center and the Gulf of Finland during the standard landing approach at Pulkovo.

Left Side Highlights
8.8
🏔️

Mount Elbrus

Shortly after takeoff from MRV, look south-west to see the twin peaks of Europe's highest mountain.

🌾

Stavropol Upland

Expansive views of the fertile agricultural heartland of southern Russia.

💧

Don River Basin

The meandering curves of the Don River as it flows through the Central Russian Upland.

🏙️

Moscow Western Periphery

Views of the dense urban sprawl and forest belts west of the capital city.

🌊

Lake Ilmen

A vast, shallow lake near Veliky Novgorod, a cradle of Russian history.

⚓

Gulf of Finland

On final approach, the sparkling Baltic waters and the flood protection dam are often visible.

Sit on the left for the best chance of seeing Mount Elbrus immediately after takeoff. On the approach to LED, if the aircraft lands from the west (Runway 10), the left side provides an incredible panorama of the Neva River and the city's historic center. Morning flights are ideal as the sun will be behind you, highlighting the Caucasus peaks.

Right Side Highlights
7.5
🌋

Mount Beshtau

The iconic five-peaked mountain near Mineralnye Vody visible immediately after rotation.

🚜

Chernozem Plains

The 'Black Earth' region featuring perfectly geometric fields and industrial Voronezh.

🏢

Moscow Skyline

On clear days, the distant skyscrapers of Moscow City can be spotted to the west.

🎣

Upper Volga River

The widening waters of the Volga near Tver and its various reservoirs.

🛶

Lake Ladoga

The massive expanse of Europe's largest lake appearing to the east during the descent.

The right side is excellent for catching the sunrise on early morning departures from MRV. As you approach St. Petersburg, you may see the sprawling suburbs and the Neva River's mouth. This side is typically quieter for glare if flying in the late afternoon when traveling north.
