Our Recommendation
8.2

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers the most dramatic views of Lake Pontchartrain immediately after takeoff from New Orleans and provides the best angle for the Detroit skyline and the winding Mississippi River meanders during the cruise.

Left Side Highlights
8.2
🌊

Lake Pontchartrain

Directly after takeoff, you will cross the massive 24-mile long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the world's longest bridge over water.

🐍

Mississippi River Oxbows

As you head north through Mississippi, look for the intricate curls and oxbow lakes created by the river's historic shifts.

🏙️

Cincinnati Skyline

On many flight paths, the aircraft passes west of Cincinnati, offering views of the Ohio River and the city's sports stadiums.

🏎️

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

If the route tracks slightly west, the massive rectangular shape of the famous Brickyard can often be spotted in Indiana.

🏢

Detroit Skyline

During the final approach into DTW, the left side typically offers a clear view of the Renaissance Center and the Detroit River.

Sit on the left for afternoon flights to keep the sun behind you for better photography. Keep your camera ready immediately after wheels-up to capture the New Orleans Causeway bridge. If landing from the south, the left side is essential for seeing the downtown Detroit area before touchdown.

Right Side Highlights
7.5
🛶

Bayou Sauvage

Views of the sprawling marshlands and wildlife refuge east of New Orleans during the initial climb.

⛰️

Appalachian Plateau

In the distance to the east, you can see the rolling, forested terrain of the Appalachian foothills in Kentucky and West Virginia.

⚓

Lake Erie Shoreline

As you enter Michigan airspace, the vast expanse of Lake Erie and the Toledo coastline appear to the east.

🚢

Detroit River Shipping

Watch for large cargo ships and tankers navigating the narrow international border between the USA and Canada.

🏝️

Grosse Ile

A group of scenic islands at the mouth of the Detroit River, visible just minutes before landing at DTW.

The right side is ideal for morning flights to see the sunrise over the southern wetlands. During the winter months, watch for the fascinating ice patterns forming on the edges of Lake Erie as you approach Michigan. This side also offers a better view of the industrial heritage of the Toledo and Detroit riverfronts.
