Our Recommendation
9.2

Right Side of the Plane

The flight from Milan to Munich is one of the most scenic short-haul routes in Europe as it traverses the heart of the Alps. The Right Side is slightly preferred for its direct views of Lake Como and the dramatic jagged peaks of the Bernina and Ortler ranges.

Right Side Highlights

🚤

Lake Como

Immediately after departing MXP, the iconic Y-shaped lake appears in stunning detail beneath the wing.

🏔️

Bernina Range

The flight path crosses near Piz Bernina, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps, featuring impressive glaciers.

⛰️

Karwendel Mountains

Just before the descent intensifies, the sharp limestone ridges of the Karwendel range on the Austrian-German border are clearly visible.

🏰

Munich City Center

Depending on the approach path, you can often see the red roofs, the Frauenkirche, and the Allianz Arena just before landing.

The right side is unbeatable for the view of Lake Como shortly after takeoff. For afternoon flights, the sun will be behind the aircraft, providing perfect lighting for photography of the snowy peaks. Try to get a seat away from the wing for an unobstructed view of the high-altitude glaciers.

🌊

Lake Maggiore

Shortly after takeoff, look out for the sprawling blue waters of Lake Maggiore to the northwest.

🏔️

Monte Rosa Massif

In the distance to the west, the snow-capped peaks of the second highest mountain in the Alps are often visible.

💧

Lake Constance

As you cross into German airspace, the vast expanse of the Bodensee marks the transition from mountains to plateau.

⛵

Ammersee

During the descent into Munich, this large Bavarian lake provides a scenic foreground to the distant mountain range.

Choose the left side for better lighting during morning flights to avoid the direct glare of the sun. This side offers a wider perspective of the Swiss Alpine range in the distance and excellent views of the Bavarian lakes during the final approach stages.
