Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers the most dramatic contrast as the flight transitions from the coastal plains of Sinaloa into the rugged, high-altitude peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental, ending with a view of the massive Barranca de Huentitán.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
⛰️

Sierra Madre Occidental

Breathtaking views of the jagged, pine-covered mountain peaks and deep river-carved valleys.

🌊

Presa Picachos

A massive reservoir nestled in the foothills shortly after departure from Mazatlán.

🏘️

Concordia and Copala

Historic colonial mining towns visible as small clusters of white and red against the green slopes.

🏜️

Barranca de Huentitán

A stunning canyon system over 500 meters deep that borders the northern edge of the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

For morning flights, sit on the left to witness the sun illuminating the western faces of the Sierra Madre canyons. During the final descent into GDL, look out for the dramatic drop-off of the Santiago River canyon. This side also provides the best perspective of the city skyline if the aircraft approaches from the north.

Right Side Highlights
8.0
🏝️

Three Islands of Mazatlán

Aerial view of Isla de Pájaros, Venados, and Lobos situated just off the coast of the main tourist zone.

🚤

Estero de Urías

The complex winding lagoon system south of Mazatlán used for navigation and shrimp fishing.

🌋

Volcán de Tequila

An extinct stratovolcano with a distinctive 'plug' at its peak, serving as a landmark for the Jalisco highlands.

🚜

Blue Agave Fields

UNESCO-listed geometric patterns of blue-hued agave plants stretching across the valleys near the town of Tequila.

Choose the right side for evening flights to enjoy the sunset over the Pacific Ocean during the initial climb. About 15 minutes before landing, keep your camera ready for the Volcán de Tequila; the symmetrical rows of blue agave at its base are highly photogenic. This side also offers a better view of the Lake Chapala basin in the distance during certain approach patterns.
