Our Recommendation
8.8

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a front-row seat to the iconic Mauritania Railway and the massive Ben Amera monolith, along with the deep iron-ore mountains of the Tiris Zemmour region.

Right Side Highlights
8.8
๐Ÿšข

Baie du Lรฉvrier

The sheltered bay east of Nouadhibou, historically known for its ship graveyard and bustling artisanal fishing.

๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ

Mauritania Railway

The path of the world's longest train; look for the thin line of the tracks and, if lucky, the 2.5km long iron-ore train.

๐Ÿชจ

Ben Amera Monolith

The world's third-largest monolith, a massive dark stone dome rising dramatically from the flat desert sands.

๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Kediet ej Jill

The highest peak in Mauritania, appearing dark and metallic because it is composed almost entirely of magnetite.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Tazadit Iron Mines

Enormous terraced open-pit mines near Zouerat that create a striking industrial contrast with the desert.

Sit on the right for the most iconic landmarks. Watch for Ben Amera roughly 30-40 minutes after takeoff; it is a massive, dark geological feature that stands out clearly against the orange sand. Polarized sunglasses are essential for spotting the railway tracks against the desert glare. Morning flights provide the best contrast for seeing the 'Train du Desert' and the deep excavations of the Tazadit mines.

Left Side Highlights
6.2
๐ŸŒŠ

Ras Nouadhibou Peninsula

The narrow, white-sand peninsula that marks the border between Mauritania and Western Sahara.

๐Ÿœ๏ธ

Grand Erg du Sahara

Vast stretches of wind-swept sand dunes and flat desert plains extending toward the northern horizon.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

International Boundary

The flight path runs parallel to the straight-line geometric border with the Western Sahara territory.

The left side provides a sense of the absolute isolation of the deep Sahara. Opt for an early morning flight to see the shadows emphasize the texture of the sand dunes. Be aware that midday sun can cause significant glare off the light-colored desert floor, making it difficult to photograph the subtle landscape changes.
