NRT → AKL
Which side of the plane to sit from Narita International Airport (Tokyo) to Auckland International Airport (Auckland)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side is generally superior for this route due to the potential for a spectacular view of Mount Fuji shortly after takeoff and the scenic approach over New Zealand's rugged west coast.
Mount Fuji
Japan's iconic snow-capped peak is often visible shortly after departure from Narita.
Tokyo Bay
Vast urban sprawl and industrial ports visible during the initial climb out of Japan.
Micronesian Atolls
Depending on the flight path, you may see coral atolls like Guam or Saipan mid-route.
Kaipara Harbour
One of the world's largest natural harbours visible as you cross the North Island.
Waitakere Ranges
Lush green coastal forests and black sand beaches on the final approach into Auckland.
For the best chance to see Mount Fuji, choose a seat on the right and hope for a westward departure with clear skies. During the approach into Auckland, the right side offers views of the Northland coastline and the Tasman Sea. If the aircraft lands toward the southwest, you may get a distant view of the Auckland CBD and the Sky Tower. Note that most of this flight is over water, so the beginning and end of the journey are the most critical times for viewing.
Pacific Blue
Vast expanses of the deep blue Pacific Ocean and unique equatorial cloud formations.
Southern Sunrise
Spectacular sunrise views over the open ocean on typical overnight schedules.
Hauraki Gulf Islands
Aerial views of Great Barrier Island and Waiheke Island during the final descent.
Coromandel Peninsula
The white sandy beaches and forested hills of the eastern North Island coastline.
The left side is the preferred choice for those who enjoy sunrise photography, as the flight typically approaches New Zealand from the north at dawn. Keep your window shade down during the middle of the flight to avoid waking others, but open it about 90 minutes before landing to see the sunrise and the Coromandel Peninsula. If the flight path takes a more easterly track, you might also spot distant lights from the Marshall Islands at night.
