NRT → PDX
Which side of the plane to sit from Narita International Airport (Tokyo) to Portland International Airport (Portland)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side is superior for its views of the Aleutian Islands during the mid-Pacific crossing and the stunning approach past Mount Hood into the Willamette Valley.
Kujukuri Beach
The sweeping coastline of the Chiba Prefecture is visible immediately after takeoff.
Aleutian Islands
A chain of volcanic islands stretching across the North Pacific, visible on northern flight paths.
Oregon Coastline
The dramatic meeting of the Pacific Ocean and the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest.
Mount Hood
Oregon's highest peak provides a spectacular landmark on the final approach into Portland.
Portland Cityscape
Views of the 'City of Roses' and the Willamette River bridges just before landing.
Choose a window seat forward of the wing to avoid engine heat distortion when photographing Mount Hood. Most NRT-PDX flights arrive in the morning; the sun will be behind you on the left side, providing excellent lighting for the Oregon coast and mountains. Check the flight path on your monitor; if you are tracking north of 50 degrees latitude, keep your eyes peeled for the Aleutian volcanoes mid-flight.
Pacific Horizon
Expansive views of the deep blue North Pacific, ideal for spotting cloud formations and the sunrise.
Olympic Mountains
The rugged peaks of Washington's Olympic National Park are visible as you approach the mainland.
Mount St. Helens
The famous blast zone and crater of this active volcano are clearly visible to the north.
Mount Rainier
Washington's tallest peak dominates the horizon during the descent toward the Columbia River.
Columbia River Gorge
The plane often follows this massive river valley which serves as a natural border between states.
The right side is best for viewing the Washington volcanoes (Rainier and St. Helens) as you descend. These are best seen roughly 30-40 minutes before landing. Be aware that morning flights may experience some glare from the southern sun on this side, making photography slightly more challenging than on the left. If the plane lands towards the west, you will get a great view of the PDX airport layout.
