Our Recommendation
8.5

Right Side of the Plane

While both sides offer spectacular views during departure from Hawaii and arrival in British Columbia, the Right Side is generally superior for its sweeping views of the Pacific Northwest coastline, the Olympic Mountains, and the iconic Vancouver skyline on final approach.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
🌋

Haleakala Peak

A stunning look back at the massive shield volcano that dominates the Maui landscape as the plane climbs.

🏔️

Olympic Mountains

On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of Washington State's Olympic National Park are visible across the border.

🌋

Mount Baker

The towering, glacier-covered stratovolcano in Washington often looms large on the horizon to the southeast.

🏙️

Vancouver Skyline

A premier view of downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, and the Lions Gate Bridge depending on the arrival runway.

🏔️

North Shore Mountains

The dramatic, steep mountains of Grouse, Seymour, and Cypress that provide the backdrop to the city.

The right side is the 'city side' for the approach into YVR. To maximize your chances of seeing Mount Baker and the downtown core, choose a seat behind the wing to avoid engine obstruction. For morning flights, the lighting on the North Shore mountains and the Coast Range is particularly vibrant and clear.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
🏝️

Molokai Coastline

Aerial views of the massive sea cliffs and rugged northern shores of the neighbor island Molokai shortly after takeoff.

🌊

Deep Pacific Blue

Hours of the vast, deep blue Pacific Ocean, perfect for spotting cloud formations and the occasional cargo ship.

🌲

Vancouver Island South

The rugged, forested terrain of southern Vancouver Island as the plane begins its descent toward the mainland.

⛴️

Strait of Georgia

The sparkling waters between the island and the mainland, often dotted with BC Ferries and pleasure craft.

🌾

Fraser River Delta

The intricate silt patterns and agricultural lands where the Fraser River meets the Pacific Ocean near the airport.

The left side is ideal for late afternoon flights if you want to witness the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. During departure, keep your camera ready for the dramatic cliffs of Molokai. On arrival, look for the intricate network of the Fraser River delta and the lighthouse at Sandheads.
