OMA → LAS
Which side of the plane to sit from Eppley Airfield (Omaha) to McCarran International Airport (Las Vegas)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side provides a superior view of the high peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park and the dramatic red rock canyons of Southern Utah.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Fly past the rugged, snow-capped peaks including the 14,259-foot Longs Peak.
Arches and Canyonlands
Vibrant red rock formations and deep canyons are visible as you cross into Utah.
San Rafael Swell
A giant 'buckle' in the Earth's crust featuring jagged ridges and hidden canyons.
Valley of Fire
Stunning bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops that appear to glow in the desert sun.
Spring Mountains
The massive limestone heights of Mt. Charleston rising west of the Las Vegas valley.
The right side offers a more consistent display of geological wonders. It is particularly striking in winter when the Rockies are covered in snow. Since this flight travels southwest, the right side faces north/northwest, meaning you will have excellent indirect light without the glare of the sun for most of the day. Be sure to look out for the distinct red-to-orange color shift in the soil as you enter the Colorado Plateau.
Platte River Valley
View the braided channels of the Platte River as you cross the Nebraska plains.
Pikes Peak
The most famous 'Fourteener' in the southern Front Range is often visible to the south.
Lake Mead
The massive blue waters of the reservoir contrasted against the black volcanic rock.
Hoover Dam
A classic aerial view of the engineering marvel on the border of Arizona and Nevada.
Las Vegas Strip
On typical approaches from the east, the left side looks directly down at the casino skyline.
The left side is premier for the final descent into LAS. If the aircraft lands on Runways 26L or 26R, you will fly directly past the Strip. Afternoon flights are best on this side to keep the sun behind you. Look for the transition from the flat agricultural grids of Nebraska into the jagged high-altitude terrain of Colorado about 45 minutes after departure.
