ORY → PDL
Which side of the plane to sit from Paris-Orly Airport (Paris) to João Paulo II Airport (Ponta Delgada)?
Right Side of the Plane
While both sides provide beautiful transitions from mainland Europe to the Atlantic, the Right Side is generally preferred for the spectacular final approach into Ponta Delgada, which often offers views of the world-famous Sete Cidades volcanic lakes and the rugged northern cliffs of São Miguel.
Versailles Estates
Depending on the departure path, a distant view of the Palace of Versailles and its expansive geometric gardens.
Brittany Peninsula
Views of the jagged western tip of France as the aircraft heads out over the open waters of the Bay of Biscay.
Atlantic Cloudscapes
Dramatic meteorological formations and the transition to the deep indigo waters of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Sete Cidades Massif
The breathtaking twin green and blue lakes nestled inside a massive volcanic caldera, visible on a northern approach.
North Coast Cliffs
Dramatic basaltic cliffs and the powerful Atlantic surf crashing against the northern shores of the island.
The right side is the 'money side' for the approach into PDL. If the wind requires a landing from the west (Runway 12), you will fly directly past the Sete Cidades lakes. On afternoon flights, use a polarizing filter to manage the sun's reflection off the Atlantic ocean.
Parisian Seine Valley
Aerial views of the southern Paris suburbs and the winding Seine River shortly after departing from Orly.
French Atlantic Coast
A clear perspective of the Vendée region, including the scenic islands of Noirmoutier and Île d'Yeu.
La Rochelle Estuary
The distinctive white bridge connecting Île de Ré to the mainland and the historic fortifications of the coast.
Vila Franca do Campo Islet
A stunning submerged volcanic crater forming a perfect natural pool just off the south coast of São Miguel.
Ponta Delgada Port
A detailed view of the city’s marina and the mosaic-patterned streets of the historic center during landing.
Choose the left side for morning flights to keep the sun behind you for better photography. It is also the best side for seeing the unique 'Princess Ring' islet near the end of the flight if the approach is from the east. Keep your camera ready as soon as you descend through the clouds near the Azores.
