PBJ → VLI
Which side of the plane to sit from Tavie Airport (Paama Island) to Bauerfield International Airport (Port-vila)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a front-row seat to the spectacular Lopevi Volcano, one of the most perfectly shaped stratovolcanoes in the world, followed by the dramatic islands of the Shepherd group.
Lopevi Volcano
An incredibly symmetrical active stratovolcano rising 1,413 meters directly out of the ocean.
Tongariki and Buninga
Aerial views of these remote, lush volcanic islands characterized by steep cliffs and deep blue water.
Mataso (The Sail)
A striking island featuring a massive, sharp peak that resembles a sail rising from the sea.
Undine Bay
The northern coastline of Efate with its intricate reef systems and turquoise lagoons.
Book an early morning flight for the best lighting on Lopevi's western face. The volcano appears almost immediately after takeoff from PBJ, so have your camera ready within the first 3 minutes of flight. This side is also superior for spotting the small, dramatic outcrops of the Shepherd Islands archipelago.
Lamen Bay
Known for its white sand and turquoise waters on the western tip of Epi Island, often home to sea turtles.
Emae Island
The largest of the Shepherd Islands, featuring three prominent extinct volcanic peaks and fertile plains.
Mele Bay
During the final approach into Port Vila, enjoy views of the famous Hideaway Island and the surrounding reefs.
Paama Coastline
Immediate views of the rocky volcanic shores and dense tropical vegetation of Paama upon departure.
The right side is ideal for afternoon flights to see the sunlight reflecting off the Coral Sea. It provides excellent views of the western coast of Epi Island, including the Cook's Reef area. On approach to VLI, watch for the cruise ship terminal and the crystal-clear waters of Mele Bay as the plane banks for landing.
