Our Recommendation
8.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side of the aircraft offers a superior view of the massive Hawaiian volcanoes, specifically Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, during the descent into Kona. It also provides excellent views of the Salton Sea and the Southern California coastline shortly after departure from Phoenix.

Left Side Highlights

🌵

Sonoran Desert & South Mountain

Dramatic views of the rugged Arizona desert landscape and the Gila River valley immediately after takeoff.

🌊

Salton Sea

A striking view of California's largest inland lake, appearing as a deep blue oasis amidst the desert terrain.

🏖️

Southern California Coast

The transition from land to the Pacific Ocean, often crossing near the San Diego or Orange County shoreline.

🌋

Mauna Kea

The world's tallest mountain from base to peak, often featuring observatory domes visible on its summit.

🌋

Mauna Loa

A massive shield volcano that dominates the horizon as you approach the Big Island from the northeast.

☕

Kona Coffee Belt

Lush green slopes and agricultural land visible during the final descent into Keahole Point.

Choose a window seat forward of the wing to avoid engine heat haze. For morning flights, the sun will be on the left side initially, so keep your window shade down until you reach the California coast. The highlight is the 20 minutes before landing when the volcanic peaks emerge from the clouds.

Right Side Highlights

🏙️

Downtown Phoenix

Bird's-eye view of the city center, including sports stadiums and the surrounding valley grid.

🏝️

Channel Islands

Glance out over the Pacific to see Santa Catalina and San Clemente islands off the California coast.

☁️

Open Pacific Horizon

Expansive, meditative views of the deep blue ocean and unique maritime cloud formations.

🌋

Haleakala (Maui)

On clear days, the massive crater of Maui's highest peak is visible across the Alenuihaha Channel.

🌊

Kohala Coastline

Rugged black lava fields meeting the turquoise waters of the Pacific during the final approach.

The right side is ideal for travelers who prefer indirect sunlight during the long westward trek. While over the ocean, look for the 'glint' of the sun on the water. On the final approach, the right side provides a great view of the stark contrast between the black lava flows and the ocean.
