Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers an unparalleled sequence of Arizona's 'Great Basin' geography, featuring the Superstition Mountains, the blue ribbon of the Salt River lakes, and the deep, rugged Salt River Canyon.

🌵

Superstition Mountains

Rugged, volcanic mountains steeped in legend, featuring steep cliffs and jagged spires visible almost immediately upon departure from PHX.

💧

Salt River Chain

A stunning series of reservoirs including Saguaro, Canyon, and Apache Lakes, nestled deep within twisting desert canyons.

🏗️

Roosevelt Dam & Lake

The largest of the Salt River lakes, featuring the massive Theodore Roosevelt Dam and the distinct white bridge crossing the narrow western end.

🏔️

Sierra Ancha Wilderness

A remote and vertical mountain range characterized by deep box canyons and prehistoric cliff dwellings hidden in the limestone layers.

🏜️

Salt River Canyon

Often called the 'Mini Grand Canyon,' this deep gorge reveals colorful layers of rock and the winding Salt River far below.

This side is a must for water views. Look for the glint of sunlight off the four lakes. Afternoon flights are spectacular as the low sun paints the Superstition Mountains and the Salt River Canyon walls in deep oranges and reds. Keep an eye out for Roosevelt Bridge about halfway through the flight.

⛰️

Four Peaks

The most prominent landmark in the Mazatzal Mountains, featuring four distinct granite summits that dominate the horizon shortly after takeoff.

🌲

Tonto National Forest

A vast expanse of ponderosa pines and high desert scrubland that transitions into the rugged wilderness of central Arizona.

🧗

Mogollon Rim Edge

The dramatic geological boundary where the desert floor rises 2,000 feet to meet the Colorado Plateau, appearing as a massive wall of rock.

Sit on the left for the best view of Four Peaks and the northern stretch of the Mazatzal Wilderness. In winter, look for the sharp contrast of snow-capped peaks against the desert valley. Early morning flights provide the best lighting for the western face of the rim.
