POM → DPS
Which side of the plane to sit from Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport (Port Moresby) to Ngurah Rai (Bali) International Airport (Denpasar)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side offers a front-row seat to the dramatic spine of New Guinea and the iconic volcanic chain of the Indonesian archipelago.
Owen Stanley Range
The rugged peaks and dense rainforests of the PNG highlands visible to the north shortly after takeoff.
Lorentz National Park
On clear days, the massive mountain ranges of West Papua, including the distant snow-capped peaks of the Jayawijaya Mountains, are visible.
Merauke Coastline
The sprawling river deltas and swampy forest coastline of southern West Papua stretching toward the horizon.
Mount Rinjani
Lombok's massive and iconic volcano, often poking through the clouds as you approach the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Mount Agung
Bali's highest point and most sacred volcano, providing a spectacular landmark during the descent into DPS.
This is the superior side for landscape photography and volcanic vistas. On the final hour of flight, keep your camera ready for Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Early in the flight, you may spot the high peaks of the central New Guinea spine in the distance. Note that the afternoon sun may be direct on this side, so window shades may be needed intermittently to reduce glare.
Gulf of Papua
Vibrant coral formations and shallow turquoise waters visible shortly after departing Port Moresby.
Torres Strait Islands
A distant view of the remote islands and reefs separating Papua New Guinea from the Australian mainland.
Arafura Sea
A vast expanse of deep blue water with occasional sightings of cargo ships on the maritime trade routes.
Sumba Coastline
The rugged and pristine southern cliffs of Sumba Island come into view during the mid-flight phase.
Bukit Peninsula
A clear view of Bali's southern tip, including the Uluwatu cliffs and luxury resorts, during the final descent into Denpasar.
Sit on the left for softer lighting during afternoon flights as the sun will be on the opposite side. You will get great views of the Torres Strait's turquoise waters shortly after takeoff and the southern coastline of Sumba and Sumbawa later in the flight. This side is generally quieter visually until the final approach into Bali.
