Our Recommendation
9.3

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a front-row seat to the most dramatic volcanic peaks of the Central Cordillera, specifically the towering Nevado del Huila, and the unique landscapes of the Sumapaz Paramo.

Right Side Highlights
9.3
🏔️

Nevado del Huila

The highest volcano in Colombia, featuring a massive, majestic ice cap that is visible for several minutes.

🌊

Upper Magdalena Valley

Looking down into the deep valley between the Central and Eastern ranges where Colombia's major river begins.

🌿

Sumapaz National Park

A rare view of the world's largest paramo (high-altitude moorland), a critical and beautiful ecosystem.

🏙️

Southeastern Bogotá

Close-up views of the dense urban development nestled against the eastern hills during the final approach.

The right side is essential for seeing the snow-capped Nevado del Huila, which is the highlight of the trip. To ensure an unobstructed view of the volcano and the Sumapaz moorlands, avoid seats directly over the wing (usually rows 10-20 on an A320). The best seasonal conditions occur during the dry periods of December-February or July-August when the peaks are most likely to be clear of mist.

Left Side Highlights

🌋

Puracé Volcano

Visible shortly after departure from Popayan, this active stratovolcano often vents steam.

⛰️

Central Cordillera

Continuous views of the jagged, high-altitude ridges that form the backbone of the Colombian Andes.

🏙️

Bogotá Western Plateau

The dramatic visual transition from the rugged mountains to the flat, expansive Sabana de Bogotá.

Sit on the left for the best view of the Puracé Volcano during the initial climb out of Popayan. This side is also preferable if the plane approaches El Dorado from the west, providing a sweeping view of the city's residential sprawl. Book early morning flights (before 9:00 AM) to avoid the thick convective clouds that typically form over the mountain ridges by midday.
