RAPORD

Our Recommendation
8.5

Right Side of the Plane

While both sides offer vast views of the American Midwest and the Missouri River, the Right Side is generally preferred for the iconic final approach into Chicago, which often provides a stunning view of the skyline and Lake Michigan.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
🌲

Black Hills National Forest

Aerial views of the dark, pine-covered mountains surrounding Rapid City during the initial climb.

🌽

Iowa Heartland

Infinite stretches of organized corn and soybean fields, often dotted with wind turbines and red barns.

🚢

Mississippi River Crossings

Excellent views of the river's industrial traffic and large bridges near the Quad Cities area.

🌆

Chicago Skyline

On many approach patterns, the right side offers a direct view of the Willis Tower and downtown skyscrapers.

🏖️

Lake Michigan Coastline

As the plane turns for ORD, you can often see the vast blue expanse of the lake meeting the urban shoreline.

Choose the right side for the best chance of seeing the Chicago skyline. For the most dramatic effect, book a sunset flight; the sun setting behind the plane will illuminate the city buildings in a gold hue. Note that if landing is from the west, the skyline may be briefly visible during the final bank.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
🏜️

Badlands National Park

Dramatic, rugged geological formations and sharp spires visible shortly after takeoff from Rapid City.

🌊

The Missouri River

A massive waterway cutting through the central plains, marking the transition from the high plains to the prairies.

🚜

Southern Minnesota Lakes

A mosaic of agricultural fields interspersed with hundreds of small, glittering glacial lakes.

🏞️

Upper Mississippi River

The flight crosses the legendary river near the border of Iowa and Illinois, showcasing wooded bluffs and islands.

🏢

North Chicago Suburbs

Dense residential grids and corporate campuses as the plane aligns for its final descent into O'Hare.

The left side is exceptional for viewing the Badlands shortly after departure from RAP. If you are flying in the late afternoon, this side will be in the shade, reducing glare for photography. Look for the distinct 'Checkerboard' pattern of the Midwest farmland throughout the mid-flight.
