Which side of the plane to sit from Yangon International Airport (Yangon) to Tachileik Airport (Tachilek)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side provides the most dramatic views of the Salween River's deep gorges and the rugged mountain ridges that define the border between Myanmar and Thailand.
Sittaung River
A winding, silver waterway that marks the boundary between the plains and the eastern mountains.
Thanlwin River Gorges
Spectacular views of the Salween River cutting deep, steep-walled valleys through the Shan Plateau.
Thai Border Ridges
The high, jagged peaks of the Daen Lao Range marking the international border with Thailand.
The Golden Triangle
The geographic convergence of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand visible during the final descent.
Choose the right side for afternoon flights to get the best light on the Salween River gorges. The approach into Tachileik is often low over mountain ridges, so have your camera ready about 15 minutes before landing. Be aware that during the 'burning season' (Feb-Apr), visibility can be significantly reduced by haze.
Yangon Cityscape
Aerial view of the sprawling city and the Hlaing River during initial climb.
Bago Yoma
The central mountain range known for its dense teak forests and undulating green hills.
Inle Lake Distance
On clear days, the vast shimmering expanse of Inle Lake is visible to the north-northwest.
Shan Plateau
The high-altitude limestone karst landscape characteristic of eastern Myanmar.
Sit on the left for morning flights to avoid direct sunlight. Keep an eye out for the distinctive circular irrigation patterns in the central plains before hitting the Shan Hills. If the flight path is more northerly, Inle Lake becomes much clearer.
