SGY → JNU
Which side of the plane to sit from Skagway Airport (Skagway) to Juneau International Airport (Juneau)?
Right Side of the Plane
While both sides offer world-class scenery, the Right Side is the clear winner for its intimate views of the massive Davidson Glacier and the iconic Eldred Rock Lighthouse sitting in the middle of the Lynn Canal.
Davidson Glacier
A stunning fan-shaped glacier that descends from the Chilkat Range almost to the sea level.
Rainbow Glacier
A high-altitude hanging glacier located just south of the Davidson, famous for its blue ice and vertical drop.
Eldred Rock Lighthouse
The oldest original lighthouse in Alaska, standing on a small island surrounded by the deep waters of the Lynn Canal.
Chilkat Range
Constant views of the jagged, snow-capped peaks that form the western wall of the fjord.
Lynn Canal
Look for humpback whale spouts and the wakes of Alaska Marine Highway ferries in the fjord below.
Mendenhall Glacier
On the final approach to Juneau, you can catch a glimpse of the famous glacier and its terminal lake to the west.
This side is a photographer's dream. Sit behind the wing for unobstructed views of the glaciers. In late summer, watch for waterfalls cascading down the cliffs of the Chilkat Range. The lighting is particularly dramatic during the late afternoon 'golden hour' in the summer months.
Skagway Harbor
Aerial view of the historic townsite and the cruise ship docks tucked into the narrow mountain valley.
Meade Glacier
A sprawling ice field visible deep within the coastal mountains to the east of the flight path.
Lions Head
A distinctive, lion-shaped rock formation that stands prominently at the entrance of Berners Bay.
Point Bridget
The lush, green expanse of Point Bridget State Park where the forest meets the rocky shoreline.
Juneau Valley
Views of the sprawling Mendenhall Valley suburbs and Auke Bay as the plane aligns for its landing.
The left side is ideal for morning flights when the sun illuminates the Lynn Canal. It also provides the best look at the narrow valleys used by the historic White Pass & Yukon Route railway during the initial climb out of Skagway.
