Our Recommendation
8.5

Right Side of the Plane

While both sides offer stunning mountain views, the right side provides a more direct perspective of the Austrian Alps' glaciers and a spectacular descent over the Rhine Gorge's castles and vineyards.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
⛰️

Dinaric Alps

Extensive limestone karst formations stretching across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

🏔️

Hohe Tauern

Breathtaking views of Austria's highest peaks, including the Grossglockner massif.

🏞️

Bavarian Lake District

Clear views of Lake Chiemsee and Lake Starnberg south of Munich.

🏰

UNESCO Rhine Gorge

A prime view of the winding Rhine River, medieval castles, and steep vineyards during the approach to Hahn.

The right side is the clear winner for the approach into HHN; as the plane descends, you can often spot the Lorelei rock and the dense concentration of castles along the Rhine. For the best alpine photography, mid-day flights provide the most vertical light to capture the deep shadows of the mountain crevasses.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
⛰️

Prokletije Mountains

The rugged 'Accursed Mountains' of the Balkan range shortly after takeoff.

🏙️

Pristina

Aerial view of the Kosovo capital city during the initial climb phase.

🏔️

Swiss-Austrian Border

Distant views of the Vorarlberg region and the high peaks of the Central Alps.

🌲

The Black Forest

Dense evergreen forests of southwestern Germany visible during the cruise-to-descent transition.

The left side is ideal for morning flights to avoid direct glare from the sun as you travel northwest. Keep an eye out for the metallic glint of Lake Constance (Bodensee) about two-thirds through the journey.
