Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers the most iconic geographical landmarks, including the stark beauty of the Great Salt Lake, the northern peaks of the Colorado Rockies, and a clear view of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis during the transcontinental crossing.

πŸ”οΈ

Northern Sierra Nevada

Dramatic granite peaks and alpine basins visible shortly after departing the Sacramento Valley.

🌊

Great Salt Lake

The shimmering expanse of Utah's inland sea, often appearing in vibrant hues of blue and green.

πŸ”οΈ

Rocky Mountain National Park

Stunning views of the high Colorado peaks including Longs Peak as the plane crosses the Continental Divide.

πŸ™οΈ

St. Louis Gateway Arch

As the flight crosses the Mississippi River, the distinct silver curve of the Arch is often visible to the north.

⛰️

Appalachian Mountains

The rolling, densely forested ridges of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains during the descent.

Sit on the left (Port) side for the best chance to see the Great Salt Lake's unique colors. On morning flights, the sun will be behind you, providing excellent lighting for photos of the Rockies. Watch for the Missouri-Mississippi river confluence near St. Louisβ€”it's a geographic marvel from 35,000 feet.

Lake Tahoe

Depending on the departure path, the deep blue waters of Tahoe are frequently visible to the south.

🏜️

Utah Red Rocks

Distant views of the winding canyons and red plateaus of southern Utah and the Moab region.

⛰️

Pikes Peak

The most famous 'Fourteener' in the southern Colorado Rockies stands out prominently on the horizon.

🌲

Ozark Mountains

A vast expanse of plateaued hills and dense forests across Missouri and northern Arkansas.

Downtown Atlanta

On many approaches to ATL, the right side provides a panoramic view of the Buckhead and Midtown skylines.

The right side is ideal for catching a glimpse of Lake Tahoe shortly after takeoff. If you are flying in the afternoon, be aware that the sun will be on this side of the aircraft for the duration of the flight, which may require closing the window shade to avoid glare. During the final approach into Atlanta, look for the sprawling urban canopy known as the 'City in a Forest'.
