STL → MCI
Which side of the plane to sit from St Louis Lambert International Airport (St. Louis) to Kansas City International Airport (Kansas City)?
Right Side of the Plane
The Right Side provides superior views of the Missouri River's northern meanders and the educational hub of Columbia during this short trans-Missouri hop.
Missouri River Confluence
The dramatic meeting point of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers north of St. Louis shortly after takeoff.
Mizzou Campus
A clear view of the University of Missouri and Faurot Field in Columbia roughly midway through the flight.
Smithville Lake
A large reservoir north of Kansas City, visible just before the final approach into MCI.
The right side offers the best views of the Missouri River valley's complex oxbows. Morning flights provide excellent lighting for the river's silver reflections. Watch for the 'M' on the field when passing over Columbia. If departing to the east, you may catch a glimpse of the Arch during the initial climb out.
Clayton Business District
The dense skyline of St. Louis's primary business hub just west of the city center.
Missouri State Capitol
The majestic dome of the capitol building in Jefferson City is visible in the distance to the south.
Downtown Kansas City
The urban core and the iconic Western Auto sign can be seen during the final descent from the south.
Choose the left side for sunset views on evening flights and the best chance to see the Missouri state capitol building in Jefferson City. During the descent, keep an eye out for the suburban sprawl of Lee's Summit and Independence. If landing from the south, this side often offers a glimpse of the KC skyline.
