SYD → AYQ
Which side of the plane to sit from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (Sydney) to Ayers Rock Connellan Airport (Uluru)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a superior view of the Australian interior's transition and provides the iconic aerial perspective of Uluru during the standard approach into Ayers Rock Airport.
Blue Mountains
Dramatic sandstone cliffs and the deep valleys of the Jamison and Megalong areas visible shortly after takeoff.
Murray-Darling Basin
Extensive agricultural patterns and the winding river systems of the New South Wales interior.
Menindee Lakes
A striking series of ephemeral lakes that create vibrant blue and green patches against the arid landscape.
The Red Centre
The dramatic color shift as the landscape turns to the deep, iconic ochre sands of central Australia.
Uluru (Ayers Rock)
The world's most famous monolith usually appears on the left side during the descent and final approach to the runway.
The left side is almost mandatory for the 'money shot' of Uluru on arrival. Choose a seat behind the wing to ensure the engine doesn't block the monolith. Morning flights are ideal as the sun will be behind or above the aircraft, illuminating the red sand without creating glare on your window. Keep your camera ready starting 20 minutes before landing.
Wollemi National Park
The rugged, untouched wilderness of the northern Blue Mountains, home to the ancient Wollemi Pine.
Central West NSW
Views of regional hubs like Dubbo and the vast patchwork of the Wheat Belt's agricultural fields.
Outback Salt Lakes
Brilliant white dry lake beds and salt pans that provide a stark, beautiful contrast to the red earth.
Simpson Desert Fringe
The edge of the Simpson Desert featuring long, parallel longitudinal sand dunes stretching to the horizon.
Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)
While Uluru is on the left, you can often see the rounded domes of Kata Tjuta in the distance to the west.
While you miss the direct view of Uluru, the right side provides excellent views of the vastness of the Simpson Desert and the salt pans of the Amadeus Basin. If the aircraft performs a specific northerly circuit due to wind conditions, the right side may occasionally catch a glimpse of the Rock, but it is much less reliable than the left side for the primary landmark.
