Which side of the plane to sit from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (Taipei) to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers an incredible sequence of Japan's most iconic landmarks, including the Ryukyu Islands, a distant but majestic view of Mount Fuji, and the rugged mountain ranges of the Japanese Alps and Tohoku region.
Taipei Northern Coast
Aerial views of Keelung's jagged coastline and the emerald waters of the East China Sea shortly after takeoff.
Ryukyu Archipelago
A bird's-eye view of the scattered islands of Okinawa and Amami, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs.
Mount Fuji
The snow-capped peak is visible on the left side approximately 2.5 to 3 hours into the flight as you pass Shizuoka.
Japanese Alps
Dramatic views of Honshu's 'backbone,' featuring the high peaks of the Hida and Kiso mountain ranges.
Lake Towada
A magnificent double-caldera lake located on the border of Aomori and Akita prefectures.
Mount Yotei
Known as the 'Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido,' this near-perfect volcanic cone is visible during the descent into Sapporo.
For the best experience, choose a window seat forward of the wing to avoid engine heat haze. On afternoon flights, the sun will be on the left/west as you travel north, so keep your window shade ready but enjoy the golden hour lighting on the Japanese landscape. Mount Fuji usually appears about 160-180 minutes after departure from TPE.
Pacific Sunrise
On early morning departures, the right side provides a front-row seat to a spectacular sunrise over the open ocean.
Kanto Plain
Distant views of the sprawling Tokyo metropolitan area and the Boso Peninsula coastline.
Sanriku Coast
The rugged rias coastline of northeastern Honshu, characterized by deep inlets and steep cliffs.
Cape Erimo
The southern tip of Hokkaido where the Hidaka Mountains descend directly into the Pacific Ocean.
Tomakomai Port
The industrial heart of southern Hokkaido, visible during the final approach into New Chitose Airport.
The right side is significantly more dominated by ocean views. However, it is the preferred side for morning flights to avoid direct glare from the sun. During the final 45 minutes of the flight, stay alert for the Tohoku coastline and the initial landfall over Hokkaido’s southern capes.
