Our Recommendation
9.2

Left Side of the Plane

Flying south from Quito along the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' provides an unparalleled view of several of the world's highest volcanoes and the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Peruvian Andes.

Left Side Highlights
9.2
🌋

Cotopaxi Volcano

One of the highest active volcanoes in the world, recognizable by its near-perfect symmetrical cone and glacier cap.

🏔️

Chimborazo

Ecuador's highest peak, known for being the point on Earth's surface closest to the sun due to the equatorial bulge.

🏔️

Cordillera Blanca

As you enter Peruvian airspace, the left side offers views of the highest tropical mountain range in the world.

❄️

Huascarán

The highest mountain in Peru and the fourth-highest in South America, located in the Huascarán National Park.

🏞️

Callejón de Huaylas

A beautiful high-altitude valley nestled between the Cordillera Negra and the ice-clad Cordillera Blanca.

The Left Side is the clear winner for mountain lovers. Most flights depart UIO in the morning, which is the best time to see the peaks before cloud cover develops. Keep your camera ready shortly after takeoff as Cotopaxi appears almost immediately.

Right Side Highlights
7.5
🌊

Gulf of Guayaquil

The largest natural harbor on the west coast of South America, visible as the plane nears the Ecuadorian-Peruvian border.

🏜️

Sechura Desert

A vast, arid landscape stretching across northern Peru, featuring impressive sand dunes and salt flats.

🏙️

Trujillo Coastline

Views of the 'City of Everlasting Spring' and the nearby ancient mud city of Chan Chan along the Pacific shore.

🌅

Pacific Horizon

The vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean provides a serene backdrop, especially beautiful during late afternoon flights.

The Right Side is preferred for late afternoon or evening flights to witness the sunset over the Pacific. However, be aware of the coastal 'Garua' (low clouds/fog) that frequently covers Lima and the northern coast from May to October, which may block ground views.
