Which side of the plane to sit from Vieques Airport (Vieques Island) to Henry E Rohlsen Airport (St. Croix Island)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides a superior vantage point for viewing the archipelago, including distant views of Culebra and the northern U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as the scenic northern coastline of St. Croix upon arrival.
Culebra Island
Direct views of the neighboring Spanish Virgin Island and its smaller surrounding cays to the north.
St. Thomas & St. John
On clear days, the mountainous silhouettes of the main U.S. Virgin Islands are visible across the Virgin Passage.
Salt River Bay
A historic estuary on St. Croix's north shore, known as the only documented site where Columbus's crew landed on U.S. territory.
Christiansted
The picturesque red-roofed colonial architecture of St. Croix's largest town during the descent.
Buck Island Reef
The vibrant turquoise waters of the national monument can often be spotted to the northeast of the island.
Choose the left side for morning flights to avoid direct sunlight and glare from the south. This side is consistently more scenic as it faces the northern island chain rather than the open Caribbean Sea. Keep your camera ready shortly after takeoff to catch the reef formations around Vieques.
Puerto Mosquito
The world-famous Bioluminescent Bay on the south coast of Vieques is visible immediately after takeoff.
Sandy Point
One of the longest and most pristine white sand beaches in the Caribbean, located on the west end of St. Croix.
Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge
A critical nesting habitat for leatherback turtles, identifiable by its sharp, sandy peninsula shape.
Frederiksted Pier
The long cruise ship pier jutting out from the historic town on the western edge of the island.
The right side is ideal for late afternoon flights to capture the sunset over the water. While the middle of the flight is mostly open ocean, the final approach offers an excellent low-altitude view of the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge and the turquoise shallows of the west end.
