Our Recommendation
7.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a superior view of the historic city of Verona upon takeoff, the dense ridge of the Apennine Mountains, and the most consistent views of the Rome metropolitan area and its landmarks during the descent into Fiumicino.

Left Side Highlights
7.8
🏰

Historic Verona

Immediately after takeoff, the left side provides a bird's-eye view of the Adige River and the ancient Roman Arena in the city center.

🏔️

Apennine Spine

The route crosses the rugged peaks of the Northern and Central Apennines, offering dramatic topography and snow-capped ridges in winter.

💧

Lake Trasimeno

As the flight heads south through Umbria, the large, shallow expanse of Lake Trasimeno is clearly visible on the left.

🏛️

Rome City Center

During the final approach, the left side often reveals the Vatican City, the Tiber River, and the sprawling historic core of Rome.

🏞️

Tiber Valley

The lush valley leading toward the capital provides a green contrast to the urban sprawl as the aircraft begins its descent.

Sit on the left for morning flights to avoid the harsh western sun and get the best light on the mountains. This side is also the 'money seat' for spotting the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica when the aircraft approaches Fiumicino from the north or east.

Right Side Highlights
6.5
🛶

Sirmione Peninsula

If the departure path banks west, you can catch a glimpse of the narrow Sirmione strip reaching into Lake Garda.

🍇

Tuscan Countryside

Enjoy the rolling hills and agricultural patterns of southern Tuscany and the Maremma region as you fly south.

🏝️

Tuscan Archipelago

In the distance, the islands of Giglio and sometimes Elba can be seen floating in the blue Tyrrhenian Sea.

🛳️

Civitavecchia Port

Just before landing, the busy cruise ship terminal and docks of Civitavecchia are visible along the coastline.

🌊

Tyrrhenian Coastline

The dramatic meeting of the blue sea and the sandy beaches of the Lazio coast dominates the view during the final minutes.

The right side is best for sunset flights, offering spectacular orange and pink reflections over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Keep an eye out for the thermal power plants and large ships near the coast which serve as great landmarks for the final approach.
