VVI → ASU
Which side of the plane to sit from Viru Viru International Airport (Santa Cruz) to Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (Asuncion)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides a more scenic perspective of the Gran Chaco's unique hydrology, featuring the expansive Bañados de Izozog wetlands and a beautiful approach over Lake Ypacaraí near Asuncion.
Rio Grande Meanders
Shortly after takeoff from VVI, observe the wide, sandy curves of the Rio Grande cutting through the tropical lowlands.
Bañados de Izozog
A massive wetland area in the Bolivian Chaco that filters the waters of the Parapetí River into a labyrinth of green and brown.
Chaco Boreal Forest
Dense, seemingly endless stretches of tropical dry forest that dominate the heart of the South American continent.
Paraguay River
The lifeblood of the region, this massive waterway becomes visible as you cross into Paraguayan territory.
Lake Ypacaraí
A famous blue-green lake located just east of Asuncion, often visible during the final descent into ASU.
Sit on the left (A seats) to capture the best light during afternoon flights, as the sun will be on the opposite side. Look for the distinct transition from the arid Chaco to the lush, water-dominated landscape near the Paraguay River. If landing from the north, you will get an excellent view of the famous 'Lago Azul' (Ypacaraí) shortly before touchdown.
Santa Cruz Cityscape
Excellent views of the concentric ring-road layout of Santa Cruz de la Sierra immediately after departure.
Kaa-Iya National Park
Views over the largest national park in Bolivia, a vital sanctuary for jaguars and iconic Chaco wildlife.
Trans-Chaco Highway
A rare sign of human engineering, this long, straight road carves through the wilderness towards the Mennonite colonies.
Asuncion Bay
During the final approach, the right side often offers a glimpse of the city center and the wide bay formed by the Paraguay River.
The right side (F seats) is ideal for spotting the unique urban planning of Santa Cruz. During the flight, keep an eye out for the straight lines of the Mennonite agricultural colonies which contrast sharply with the wild scrubland. For evening flights, the sunset over the Chaco horizon is visible from this side, providing spectacular orange and purple gradients.
