Which side of the plane to sit from Beaver Airport (Beaver) to Fairbanks International Airport (Fairbanks)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides the most dramatic views of the White Mountains and the winding Yukon River, with the potential for the massive peaks of the Alaska Range to be visible on the southern horizon during descent.
Yukon River Meanders
Spectacular aerial views of the Yukon River's complex bends and sandbars immediately following departure from Beaver.
White Mountains
Stunning limestone ridges and jagged peaks of the White Mountains National Recreation Area halfway through the route.
Tanana River Valley
The wide, silt-laden Tanana River valley comes into view as the aircraft enters the Interior basin near Fairbanks.
Distant Alaska Range
On exceptionally clear days, the massive peaks of the Alaska Range, including Denali, are visible on the southern horizon.
Choose the left side for morning departures to maximize the lighting on the White Mountains. This side offers the best perspective of the geographic transition from the Yukon Flats into the higher mountainous terrain. In winter, watch for the frozen braided channels of the Tanana River which create intricate geometric patterns below.
Yukon Flats
A vast landscape of wetlands and boreal forest containing thousands of small lakes and migratory bird habitats.
Ray Mountains
Distant views of the isolated Ray Mountains range located to the west of the primary flight path.
Minto Flats
A sprawling wetland complex known for its incredible biodiversity and intricate seasonal water patterns.
UAF Campus
The hilltop campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks is prominently visible during the final descent into FAI.
The right side is ideal for summer evening flights to witness the golden hour over the endless Yukon Flats. As you approach Fairbanks, look for the historical gold dredge tailings and the prominent university buildings on the hill. This side generally provides a more comprehensive view of the Fairbanks city layout during the final approach.
