WDH → JNB
Which side of the plane to sit from Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek) to OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides optimal lighting during common morning departures and superior views of the transition from the Namibian highlands to the Kalahari, plus potential sightings of the Pretoria skyline on the approach.
Auas Mountains
Stunning rocky ridges visible immediately after takeoff from Windhoek's high-altitude plateau.
Kalahari Red Dunes
The characteristic linear red sand dunes of the Kalahari Desert forming intricate patterns below.
Salt Pans
Numerous white, shimmering salt pans scattered across the arid landscape near the South African border.
Pretoria Skyline
On the descent into JNB, the administrative capital's skyline and the Union Buildings are often visible in the distance.
Highveld Storms
During summer months, dramatic afternoon cumulonimbus clouds often build up on this side of the aircraft.
For morning flights, the left side keeps the sun behind or above the plane, preventing harsh glare on the window. Look out for the 'red dunes' about 30-40 minutes into the flight. If the plane approaches OR Tambo from the north, you will get an excellent view of the Jacaranda City (Pretoria).
Sishen Mine
One of the world's largest open-cast iron ore mines, identifiable by its massive terraced pits near Kathu.
Orange River Ribbon
A thin green line of vegetation cutting through the desert, marking the lifeblood of the Northern Cape.
Circular Irrigation
Distinctive 'crop circles' created by center-pivot irrigation systems near the Vaal River.
Johannesburg Gold Dumps
The iconic yellow-tinted mine tailing piles that define the historic gold-mining landscape of the Witwatersrand.
FNB Stadium
The 'Soccer City' calabash-shaped stadium may be visible if the flight path tracks slightly south during the JNB arrival.
The right side is the best choice for afternoon or evening flights to catch the sunset over the desert. Keep a keen eye out for the Sishen Mine about midway through the flight; its scale is truly gargantuan from 35,000 feet. Avoid sitting directly over the wing (usually rows 12-22) to ensure a clear view of the ground features.
