WDH โ WVB
Which side of the plane to sit from Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek) to Walvis Bay Airport (Walvis Bay)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a front-row seat to one of the most dramatic transitions on Earth: the Kuiseb River canyon where the towering red dunes of the Namib Sand Sea abruptly stop against the northern gravel plains. As you approach Walvis Bay, you also get a clear view of the colorful salt pans.
Auas Mountains
Rugged peaks and deep valleys of the Khomas Hochland plateau visible immediately after departure from Windhoek.
Kuiseb Canyon
A spectacular geological boundary where the ancient riverbed prevents the southern dunes from encroaching on the northern plains.
Namib Sand Sea
Endless waves of orange and red sand dunes that constitute a UNESCO World Heritage site stretching toward the Atlantic.
Walvis Bay Salt Works
Brilliant pink and turquoise evaporation ponds located just south of the airport during the final descent.
Sit on the left side for morning flights to avoid direct sun glare while capturing the deep shadows of the Namib dunes. The Kuiseb River crossing is the visual highlight, marking the start of the sand sea. Keep your camera ready during the descent for the striking colors of the salt works which are highly photogenic from low altitudes.
Khomas Hochland
An expansive mountainous plateau with deeply incised valleys and rolling hills characteristic of central Namibia.
Moon Landscape
Surreal, crater-like rock formations carved by the Swakop River over millions of years, appearing like a lunar surface.
Rรถssing Mine
One of the largest open-pit uranium mines in the world, visible as a massive man-made excavation in the desert floor.
Swakopmund View
The charming German-influenced coastal town and the Swakop River mouth are often visible just before the turn to land.
The right side is ideal for viewing the rugged Swakop River valley and the 'Moon Landscape' badlands. If the flight path takes a northern approach, you may catch a glimpse of Swakopmund. Be aware that coastal fog is frequent in the late afternoon, which can obscure ground views as you approach the Atlantic coastline.
