Which side of the plane to sit from Wakkanai Airport (Wakkanai) to Tokyo Haneda International Airport (Tokyo)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side offers a spectacular parade of volcanic peaks and landscapes, starting with the iconic 'Floating Island' of Mount Rishiri and concluding with the majestic Mount Fuji during the descent into Tokyo.
Mount Rishiri
A breathtaking conical volcano rising directly out of the Sea of Japan, visible shortly after departing Wakkanai.
Mount Iwate
The highest mountain in Iwate Prefecture, often called the 'Mount Fuji of Nambu' for its symmetrical shape.
Mount Fuji
The crown jewel of Japanese landmarks, visible in the distance during the descent phase into the Kanto Plain.
Tokyo Cityscape
Depending on the wind and approach path, you may see the Tokyo Skytree and the dense Shinjuku skyline.
Lake Towada
A massive, deep blue caldera lake located on the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures.
For the absolute best experience, book a window seat on the right side. On clear days, Mount Rishiri appears almost immediately after takeoff to the west. As you head south, you'll pass the spinal mountain ranges of Honshu. Keep your camera ready about 20 minutes before landing; as the plane begins its final descent into Haneda, Mount Fuji typically appears to the west/southwest. In winter, these snow-capped peaks are exceptionally clear and provide world-class photography opportunities.
Sea of Okhotsk
Stunning views of the northern coastline and the cold waters of the Okhotsk Sea immediately after takeoff.
Matsushima Bay
One of the 'Three Views of Japan,' featuring hundreds of tiny pine-clad islands near Sendai.
Chiba Industrial Zone
Intricate aerial views of the massive industrial shipping ports and refineries lining the eastern side of Tokyo Bay.
Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line
The unique bridge-tunnel combination crossing Tokyo Bay is often visible just before touchdown at Haneda.
The left side is best for early morning flights to avoid the direct glare of the sun. It provides a better perspective of the rugged Sanriku coastline and the Pacific Ocean. Look for the distinct shape of Matsushima Bay about 45-50 minutes into the flight. If the flight path approaches Haneda from the east, you will have a clear view of the Kisarazu area and the Umi-hotaru parking area in the middle of the bay.
