Which side of the plane to sit from Bearskin Lake Airport (Bearskin Lake) to Sioux Lookout Airport (Sioux Lookout)?
Left Side of the Plane
The Left Side (East) offers the most expansive views of the major lake systems of the Canadian Shield, including the massive North Caribou Lake and the intricate bays of Lac Seul during the approach.
Severn River System
Just after takeoff from Bearskin Lake, watch the winding Severn River as it meanders through the dense boreal landscape.
North Caribou Lake
One of the largest lakes in the region, featuring a complex coastline and numerous rocky islands characteristic of the Shield.
Unbroken Boreal Forest
Vast stretches of deep green spruce and pine forests occasionally broken by wetlands and muskeg bogs.
Windigo Lake
A prominent landmark halfway through the flight, showing the rugged, remote beauty of Northern Ontario.
Lac Seul Reservoir
A massive body of water with thousands of kilometers of shoreline that dominates the view as you descend toward Sioux Lookout.
For morning flights, the left side is bathed in soft light, making the blue of the lakes pop against the forest. Keep an eye out for small bush planes on the water near remote outposts. In winter, the frozen lakes look like vast white plains.
Muskrat Dam Lake
Visible shortly after departure, look for the remote community and the surrounding river networks.
Sachigo River Drainage
An intricate web of streams and smaller lakes that drain north toward the Hudson Bay Lowlands.
St. Joseph Lake
A long, narrow lake system to the southwest that marks the transition into the more travelled Sioux Lookout district.
Minnitaki Lake
The primary lake surrounding Sioux Lookout, offering stunning views of deep blue water and granite outcrops upon final approach.
Western Horizon
On late afternoon flights, this side provides spectacular sunset views over the remote wilderness of the Ontario-Manitoba border.
The right side is ideal for evening flights to catch the sunset over the wilderness. Polarizing sunglasses are highly recommended to cut the glare off the thousands of small 'pot-hole' lakes that dot the landscape.
