YSK β YUD
Which side of the plane to sit from Sanikiluaq Airport (Sanikiluaq) to Umiujaq Airport (Umiujaq)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides a superior vantage point for the intricate Belcher Islands archipelago during departure and offers a clearer view of the unique Nastapoka Islands chain that parallels the coastline upon arrival.
Belcher Archipelago
The complex, maze-like patterns of Flaherty Island's coastline and surrounding islets visible immediately after takeoff.
Nastapoka Islands
A striking string of narrow islands that run perfectly parallel to the eastern Hudson Bay shoreline.
Hudson Bay Depths
Deep blue waters in summer or vast, shifting pack ice during winter months, occasionally showing leads of open water.
Sit on the left for the best view of the 'Nastapoka Arc,' the famous curved coastline of Hudson Bay. In winter, look for the 'Stolby' or ice pressure ridges that form unique patterns on the bay's surface. Morning flights provide excellent lighting on the islands without the glare of the southern sun.
The Cuestas
Dramatic, asymmetrical ridges with steep cliffs facing the sea and gentle slopes inland, characteristic of this region.
Tursujuq National Park
The western edges of Quebec's largest provincial park, featuring a rugged subarctic landscape.
Sanikiluaq Settlement
A brief view of the community of Sanikiluaq nestled on the north end of Flaherty Island during the climb out.
The right side is excellent for observing the mainland geology. As you approach Umiujaq, watch for the 'cuestas' (rock ridges) which are world-class examples of this landform. If flying in the late afternoon, the low sun highlights the shadows and textures of the tundra and rock formations beautifully.
