YWG β†’ ORD

Our Recommendation
8.7

Left Side of the Plane

The left side is superior primarily for the approach into Chicago. As the plane descends into O'Hare, passengers on the left often get a sweeping view of the Chicago skyline, the iconic lakefront, and the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, whereas the right side mostly sees suburban sprawl.

Left Side Highlights
8.7
🏘️

Winnipeg Outskirts

Aerial views of the Forks and the convergence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers immediately after takeoff.

🌊

Lake of the Woods

On a clear day, look east to see the massive, island-filled waters spanning the border of Manitoba, Ontario, and Minnesota.

πŸŒ†

Twin Cities Skyline

A distant but clear view of the Minneapolis and St. Paul downtown areas as the flight bypasses them to the east.

🏞️

Mississippi River

The flight path crosses the headwaters and wider sections of the historic river near the MN-WI border.

πŸ›οΈ

Madison Isthmus

Wisconsin’s capital city is clearly visible, nestled uniquely between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona.

πŸ™οΈ

Chicago Skyline

During the standard approach to ORD, the left side offers a stunning panorama of the Willis Tower and the downtown loop.

πŸ’§

Lake Michigan

The deep blue expanse of the Great Lake becomes the primary view during the final descent into the city.

Book a window seat on the left for evening flights to witness the spectacular 'grid' of Chicago lights. During the winter, keep an eye out for the frozen patterns on the Red River and smaller Minnesota lakes. If the aircraft approaches ORD from the east over the lake, the left side is essential for the best city views.

Right Side Highlights
6.4
🚜

Red River Valley

Observe the remarkably flat and fertile agricultural patchwork of the border region between North Dakota and Minnesota.

πŸ›Ά

Land of 10,000 Lakes

An endless array of glacial lakes dotting the central Minnesota landscape, creating a beautiful blue-and-green mosaic.

πŸŒ„

Driftless Area

View the rugged, unglaciated topography of southwestern Wisconsin, characterized by deep valleys and high bluffs.

β›³

Fox River Valley

Follow the winding path of the Fox River as it meanders through the suburbs of northern Illinois.

πŸ›«

O'Hare Operations

Excellent views of the complex runway systems and massive terminal buildings during the final taxi to the gate.

Choose the right side if you are flying in the early morning to avoid the direct glare of the rising sun. This side provides a better perspective of the unique 'Driftless Area' terrain in Wisconsin. It is also the better side for observing the intricate logistics and cargo operations on the west side of O'Hare airport upon landing.
