YXS → YKA
Which side of the plane to sit from Prince George Airport (Prince George) to Kamloops Airport (Kamloops)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides a superior vantage point of the rugged Cariboo and Monashee Mountain ranges, as well as the scenic North Thompson River valley during the final descent.
Cariboo Mountains
Dramatic snow-capped peaks and alpine ridges visible shortly after departure from Prince George.
Quesnel Lake
The deepest fjord-style lake in North America, recognizable by its unique 'Y' shape and deep blue waters.
Wells Gray Provincial Park
Vast wilderness known for volcanic plateaus and dense old-growth forests to the east of the flight path.
North Thompson Valley
The aircraft often follows this river corridor, offering views of the CN Rail line and winding riverbanks.
Mount Lolo
A prominent peak marking the entrance to the Kamloops area during the initial stages of descent.
Morning flights are best on the left side to avoid direct sun glare while illuminating the mountain peaks to the east. Keep an eye out for Quesnel Lake about 20 minutes into the flight, as it is one of the most striking inland water bodies in BC. In winter, the contrast between the dark evergreens and white snow on the mountains is exceptional.
Fraser River Confluence
A great view of the Nechako and Fraser Rivers joining together at the city of Prince George.
Cariboo Plateau
A mosaic of sprawling cattle ranches and thousands of small glacial 'pothole' lakes.
Williams Lake
The urban center of the Cariboo region and its namesake lake are clearly visible at cruising altitude.
Kamloops Lake
Stunning views of the arid, semi-desert hills surrounding the lake just before landing at YKA.
Kamloops Cityscape
Bird's-eye view of the city center and the 'Tournament Capital' sports complexes on approach.
Sit on the right for evening flights to catch the sunset over the rolling plateau. This side is also excellent for observing the transition from the dense forests of the north to the arid, desert-like grasslands of the Thompson Valley. Watch for the dramatic color change in the terrain as you pass 70 Mile House and head south toward Kamloops.
