SNP → STG
Which side of the plane to sit from St Paul Island Airport (St. Paul Island) to St George Airport (Point Barrow)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side is slightly preferred as it provides a superior view of the village of St. George and the eastern volcanic formations of the islands during the short inter-island hop.
Polovina Hill
A prominent volcanic cinder cone on the eastern side of St. Paul Island visible shortly after takeoff.
Lukanin Bay
One of the most densely populated Northern Fur Seal rookeries on St. Paul, visible along the shoreline.
Bering Sea Shelf
The shallow, nutrient-rich waters between the islands often appear in deep emerald or grey hues.
St. George Village
The approach into STG offers a clear view of the small settlement and its historic Russian Orthodox church.
Choose the left side for the approach into St. George; the village and harbor are usually more visible from this side. Because the flight is less than 30 minutes, keep your window shade up the entire time. Morning flights can offer mystical views of the 'Pribilof fog' clinging to the volcanic craters.
St. Paul Townsite
Excellent views of the main harbor and the town of St. Paul immediately following departure.
Zapadni Rookery
Massive colonies of fur seals can be spotted along the southwestern coastline of St. Paul Island.
High Bluffs of St. George
Dramatic, sheer volcanic cliffs on the western edge of St. George Island that rise abruptly from the sea.
Otter Island
A small, uninhabited volcanic islet used as a bird sanctuary, often visible to the west mid-flight.
The right side is ideal for seeing the seals at Zapadni during the summer months. Note that these flights are often on smaller turboprop aircraft (like the Saab 340); window alignment is generally good, but try to avoid seats directly over the wing to maintain a clear view of the cliffs during descent.
