YQB → YWK
Which side of the plane to sit from Quebec Jean Lesage International Airport (Quebec) to Wabush Airport (Wabush)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side of the aircraft offers an unparalleled view of the Manicouagan Reservoir, also known as the 'Eye of Quebec,' which is a massive impact crater visible from space. This side also provides the best perspective of the rugged Laurentian terrain as you ascend from Quebec City.
Quebec City Skyline
A stunning view of the historic district and the St. Lawrence River shortly after takeoff from YQB.
Laurentian Mountains
Fly over one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, featuring dense forests and rolling peaks.
Manicouagan Reservoir
A breathtaking look at the annular lake formed by a meteorite impact 214 million years ago.
Boreal Wilderness
Vast stretches of untouched taiga and coniferous forests that define the Canadian Shield.
Sculpted Mine Pits
Dramatic views of the massive open-pit iron ore mines near Labrador City during the descent into Wabush.
Sit on the left (Port) side for the best chance to see the Manicouagan impact crater, which usually appears about two-thirds of the way through the flight. For morning flights, this side is ideal as the sun will be behind you or to the right, reducing window glare. In winter, the frozen white ring of the reservoir is exceptionally clear against the dark forest.
Ile d'Orleans
Views of the agricultural island sitting in the middle of the St. Lawrence River during the initial climb.
St. Lawrence Estuary
Glimpses of where the river widens significantly toward the Gulf, showcasing the scale of the waterway.
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean
Distal views of the rugged Saguenay region and the mouth of its famous fjord system.
Labyrinth of Lakes
The right side features an endless mosaic of thousands of small, pristine glacial lakes across the shield.
QNS&L Railway
Look for the winding tracks of the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway cutting through the wilderness.
The right side is excellent for viewing the expansive water systems of the Cote-Nord region. If the flight path takes a more easterly route, you may see the edge of the Saguenay Fjord. During late afternoon flights, the right side will experience direct sunlight, so keep your window shade ready if the glare becomes too intense.
